workers
Plan International representatives met with  ARA/SPF field workers in Bafut
Cameroon  as part of the PROGRAM ASSURANCE  EVALUATION assessing the
effectiveness of joint projects with ARA/SPF Cameroon. It was a very productive
meeting with plans to expand the work to reach more orphans in the villages of
Cameroon. Plan International has been co-sponsoring the project run under
ARA's Socio-economic Renaissance Division subsidiary SPF. Plans are currently
underway for the next phase of the project. ARA/SPF and Plan International

May 01, 2008: ARA Champions the fight against Cancer in Cameroon.

ARA is championing the course of  providing Palliative care to Cancer patients
in Cameroon. The Cameroon government is partnering with ARA in this
venture.

In the next 5 months, ARA will  be organizing 100 information, education,
communication (IEC) sessions in the Donga Mantung Division  of Cameroon
on Palliative care of Cancer patients. There will be extensive media
communications including community radio programs and information and
education of 100 njangi houses (village Financial  saving groups), churches,
schools, youth groups and hospitals.

Cancers in all forms are causing about 12 per cent of deaths throughout the
world. In the developed countries cancer is the second leading cause of death
accounting for 21% (2.5 million) of all mortality. In the developing countries
cancer ranks third as a cause of death and accounts for 9.5% (3.8 million) of
all deaths. Tobacco alcohol, infections and hormones contribute towards
occurrence of common cancers all over the world. Breat Cancer and Uterine
Cancer are the most prevalent in Cameroonin women(about 33% and 24 %,
respectively).  In men, prostate cancer and liver cancer dominate.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines palliative care as a holistic
approach to improve the quality of life of patients with incurable disease and
their families, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early
identification and careful assessment and treatment of pain and other
problems, physical, psychological and spiritual. Palliative care should be an
integral part of the comprehensive care and support of patients. It should be
provided in the framework of a continuum of care from the time the incurable
disease is diagnosed until the end of life. In order to ensure adequate
population coverage, it is important that it be provided in health institutions as
well as in homes and community –based organisations.

ARA is actively working with the Cameroon  Cancer program in vital outreach
as the first step towards greater active involvement of ARA's Science and
Technology Division to promote healthier African societies with the support of
the African Diaspora and goodwill non-Africans. As the saying goes, Health is
wealth. ARA is also carrying out or supporting projects in other areas:
Malaria,
Epilepsy, and psychosocial care and Telemedicine.

Nobel Laureate Desmond Tutu Hails the African
Renaissance Ambassador Initiative

After a fortuitousmeeting by African Renaissance
Ambassador Corp (ARA) co-founder Dr Wilfred Ngwa with
Nobel Laureate Desmond Tutu in Cambridge,
Massachusetts, Arch Bishop Tutu heartily lauded the African
Renaissance Ambassador initiative: “I am impressed with
your enthusiastic commitment to the concept of the African
Renaissance…God bless your admirable efforts.” Professor
Ngwa was in Harvard to rally support for an ARA initiative to
establish an International Center of Research Excellence in
Science and Technology (ICREST), which would constitute a
new model of transformative international science and
technology collaborations between Western and Africa
Institutions, actively involving African Diaspora graduate
students, young scientists and engineers.

The
Desmond Tutu Peace Centre, as a place of peace,
challenge and hope is committed to nurturing young people
as they search for and dream of a future of peace for all.
While focusing on leadership development and peace-
building, the Tutu Centre sees the individual in the context of
her / his community, and offers carefully crafted learning
programs that enrich, encourage and deepen young people
committed to building reconciled, transformed, equitable and
just communities. This is very much in line with ARA’s
objective to develop a new generation of African
Renaissance Ambassadors who are actively involved in
transformative activities, like the ICREST initiative, that would
facilitate Africa’s globally beneficial renewal. ARA is currently
planning to take the Trade Mark African Renaissance
Ambassador Debates to South Africa in 2008 in partnership
with The Desmond Tutu Peace Centre.

The meeting in Cambridge led to a propitious partnership
agreement between The Desmond Tutu Peace Centre in
Cape Town and ARA Corp, New Jersey. ARA is currently
planning to run the Trade Mark African Renaissance
Ambassador Debates in South Africa, in partnership with The
Desmond Tutu Peace Centre.
