Prayer Topics
As a resurrection people we believe Africa is rising to
new life. Through the African people, strong in faith and
rich in hope, a new future is dawning. Because we are
the people of God, we stand and proclaim in prayer our
commitment to work with, to come to know and to be in
solidarity with our African brothers and sisters.

Nigeria

Pray for the Christian community in Kano, northern Nigeria, following unrest
that left 25 Islamic fundamentalists killed by the army. A group of 300 militants
killed nine policemen and barricaded themselves in a nearby waterworks
before the army arrived. Kano has always been a hotbed of fundamentalist
sects. Pray for the church leaders in the area, that they may use their
influence to bring peace and harmony.

Zimbabwe
Member of the Zimbabwe Christian Alliance (ZCA) were intensely questioned
by police for an hour and half prior to a prayer member recently. The meeting
was an opportunity to pray for peace in the midst of Zimbabwe’s deepening
crisis. Gaining permission from the police to hold the meeting involved a
“concerted struggle”. A ZCA spokesman said “the state is no longer
comfortable with the church’s activities”. Pray that justice and good
governance will come quickly and peacefully to Zimbabwe. Give thanks that
Christians are willing to meet to pray for their country despite facing such
intense intimation.

Darfur, Western Sudan
Access to people in need continues to be denied to aid workers in some
areas of Darfur, says the UN Under-Secretary General, John Holmes. Vital aid
is not getting through. Mr Holmes was not allowed to visit a camp for
displaced people in a government-held town in north Darfur. He was on a tour
round Sudan, Chad and the Central African Republic. Some 4 million people
in Darfur rely on local and international aid agencies for basics such as food,
water and healthcare. Aid staff were forced to evacuate from some areas in
south Darfur recently. They have now returned but the situationis still very
volatile.

Guinea
After nearly 90 years of Christian witness, there are only about 30 Maninka
believes and one pastor. The Maninka people of Upper Guinea are Muslim
and largely resistant to the gospel. However, work is underway on a new
Bible translation which will help the Maninka better understand God’s love for
them. The old translation of the New Testament was extremely difficult to
understand – to the point that many people claimed it wasn’t their language.
Guinea is facing a time of political instability and fear. Pray that the word of
God offers peace and hope for the future and that through the ministry of Bible
translation, the Maninka people will hear these words in their heart language.
Pray that these Scriptures will be widely distributed.

Somalia
Fighting in Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital, has intensified in recent weeks.
The main hospital is struggling to cope with the number of injured people.
Basic essentials are shooting up in price as they become scarcer Many of the
displaced people do not have enough food or water and cannot be accessed
by aid agencies because of the insecurity. Please pray that both sides
involved in the political conflict will be able to talk to one another and negotiate
the best way to resolve the situation, so that further fighting and casualties
can be avoided.

We pray for peace in Africa and in the world. May we become peacemakers in
our country, our homes and in our hearts.

We pray for the people of Africa and for ourselves. May we grow in our belief
that through solidarity grounded in love we will transform the world.

We pray for the leaders of Africa. May their decisions respond to the needs of
